Die Variationen des Materials (Pigmente, Tempera, Ölfarbe, Wachs) sind immer Teil der Untersuchung, Teil der Entdeckung. Aber jedem Bild liegt die mich umgebende gegenständliche Welt und ihre Erscheinungen zu Grunde. Es geht immer auch um die flüchtigen Dinge in der Welt, das Licht - der Raum zwischen den Gegenständen, die Erinnerung, Geschichten. Die Malerei entwickelt sich aus einer Wechselwirkung zwischen "Bildidee" und "Materialidee". Neue Bezüge stellen sich her und man weiß vorher nicht, wo es enden wird. Die Farbe macht auf etwas aufmerksam, zeigt etwas, zeigt sich selbst. Im fertigen Bild sind solche Momente versammelt.
In einem früheren Werkabschnitt mit dem Arbeitstitel "Negativland" beschäftigte mich die Möglichkeit optischer und begrifflicher Gegenbilder. Die Motive verweisen durch das Prinzip der Farbumkehrung und der daraus resultierenden Verselbständigung des Motivs auf eine fremde und irrationale Seite vertrauter Dinge. Malerisch bedeutet dies eine Befreiung vom naturalistischen Abbild und eine Konzentration auf die Farbe und auf die Potentiale der Malerei. Hiervon habe ich profitiert. Ich sehe in der Malerei weiterhin ungeahnte Möglichkeiten.“(1178)

Pigments, tempera paint, oil paint and wax are the tools used to create such rich colours and variations in form. I use these diverse materials to create all manner of forms of shades, thereby investigating the possibilities open to me in making an image. Sometimes, I move beyond representation. Yet each painting has its roots in the objects and images around me. Painting is the result both of the notion of the image and the process of making it. The effect these two components of art-making have on each other is a crucial aspect of the picture itself. The process in which the painting is realised can be excruciating; it is a process of delving into the nature of the medium. Spots, lines, and colour surfaces alter the tension in the composition in every stage of the process and this can be traced in the resulting, completed work of art.
In my recent series entitled “Negativland”, I toyed with the dynamic between what part for a painting looks like and what it stands for. Each composition is also the result of colour reversal processes as well as the effect this has on how recognisable images change merely by altering the colour, exposing new aspects of familiar things. This frees the paintings from the constraints of depiction and focuses attention, instead, on colour and the pure energy inherent in the medium. I benefit from this by constantly rediscovering the unlimited possibilities that painting offers me as an artist.”
